What Makes a Good Copywriter?
The people behind the slogans of Nike and McDonalds are brilliant. Let me explain why.
Yesterday, I sat through a 1-hour FREE course on Copywriting from HRDCorp’s e-LATiH.
If you’re selling a product or simply want to write for more engagement, this course is for you.
Here’s what I learned.
What is Copywriting?
Think slogans, ad lines, catchphrases, and billboards – that’s what copywriters do.
They write to drive sales and generate leads.
They reel you in to take action or “seal the deal.”
Traits of a Good Copy
A good writer cuts through the jargon and gets to the point.
They use simple language to connect with the audience and motivate curiosity.
If a 10-year-old can’t understand what you’re writing, then it’s too complex.
Traits of a Bad Copy
Bad writers write for themselves.
Their sentences are too wordy and difficult for people to read.
They also use many complex words that even a rocket scientist can’t understand.
Good: The people behind the slogans of Nike and McDonalds are brilliant. Let me explain why.
Bad: In the context of multinational giants like McDonald's and Nike, I am writing to elucidate the profound importance of copywriting in contemporary business communication and marketing strategies, underscoring its pivotal role in shaping brand perception, fostering customer engagement, and ultimately driving organizational success, thereby exemplifying how these industry leaders leverage effective copywriting to maintain their global brand dominance. Examples of Great Copywriting
Ask yourself:
What made you buy that particular item?
Why did you stop scrolling on Instagram to watch that ad?
Why do I feel like having Ayam Goreng McD?
When writing a slogan, catchphrase, or a cheesy one-liner, think of these four things:
How do I catch the audience’s attention?
How can I retain their interest?
What is their desire?
What makes them take action?
Know. Your. Audience.
Writing becomes pointless if you don’t know who you’re writing for.
Who are they?
What do they do?
What are their pain points?
What do they value?
Resources to simplify your copywriting
Personally, we use:
Hemingway Editor (shortens your long sentences)
Thesaurus (to find synonyms to words)
And
ChatGPT (to make our sentences unnecessarily complex)
Now that you’ve got the basics, here’s a challenge for you.
Think of a good slogan for:
- Milo
- Marrybrown
